Livescribe has released a latest smartpen the Livescribe 3.

Livescribe 3 smartpen connects via app and lets users record notes on a smartphone or tablet.

While the Livescribe Sky WiFi pen transfers handwritten notes to the cloud, the Livescribe 3 transfers notes directly to iOS devices, without the need for Wi-Fi.

The pen pairs via Bluetooth LE, and is used in conjunction with a Livescribe notebook and the Livescribe+ app. The pages of the notebook are patterned with dots, which an integrated Infrared camera uses to locate and record the pen’s position on the page. The device then transmits the pen’s movements to the app, which recreates the handwriting on the smartphone or tablet.

Unlike Livescribe’s previous smartpens, the new pen doesn’t feature a built-in microphone for audio recording. However, it does feature a button that activates the audio recording facility of the connected iPhone or iPad. The audio is synced with the transmitted handwriting, meaning that when the recording is played back, each word will highlight on-screen in time with when it was written.

While the audio ‘pencasts’ can’t be recorded if not connected to a device, notes can be taken with the pen away from the device that are then saved and transferred to the app later. Photos can also be added to the text.

The pen’s ballpoint nib and text digitising feature are activated by a twist of the pen’s middle ring. A single LED light gives Bluetooth pairing, connection and battery indications – with the battery, which is charged via MicroUSB, lasting for up to 14 hours. The top of the pen can also be used as a stylus for touchscreen devices, and the pen can be located using the Find My Pen function in the Livescribe+ app. The app also allows notes to be organised by time, relevance and separate recognised Livescribe notebooks. URLs, addresses and phone numbers can be automatically used to open map, contact and reminder apps, and notes can be shared via email, Dropbox, Evernote or iCloud.

The Livescribe 3 is available now, starting at £119.99 for the pen and a 50- sheet notepad, with a Pro Edition that includes a leather portfolio, 100-sheet hardbound journal and additional ink cartridge for £169.99.
